In what could be a grave insult, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-granddaughter Ashish Lata Ramgobin has been jailed by a South African court. Going into details, 56 years old Lata is the daughter of renowned human rights activist Ela Gandhi and Mewa Ramgobin.

Lata was reportedly involved and accused in a six-million rand (South African currency) fraud and forgery case of 2015. Lata allegedly was charged with scamming businessman SR Maharaj after he paid 6.2 milli rand on to her for allegedly clearing import and Customs duties for a non-existent consignment from India. He was promised a share of profits.

SR Maharaj, director of the New Africa Alliance Footwear Distributors imports and manufactures and sells clothing, linen and footwear. Lata met Maharaj in Augus 2015 and she told that she had imported three containers of linen for the South African Hospital Group NetCare.

To convince Maharaj, Lata provided dubious documents but later Maharaj found that all the documents are forged and Lata had cheated him and following this the businessman levelled criminal charges against her.

A court in Durban found Lata guilty in the case and granted her seven years of imprisonment.
