Computer security company McAfee founder John McAfee was found dead in his jail cell in Spain on Wednesday. He was found dead shortly after a court approved his extradition to the United States where he was wanted for tax evasion.
The 75-year-old antivirus software pioneer is believed to be an “apparent suicide”, a spokeswoman for the prison system in the northeastern Catalonia region said. However, no further details are disclosed. John McAfee had been in jail from October 2020 when he was arrested at Barcelona airport.
He was caught in the airport as he was about to fly to Istanbul. He was arrested for failing to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018, despite earning millions from consulting work, cryptocurrencies and selling the rights to his life story.
If convicted, he could have faced up to 30 years in prison. On Wednesday, Spain’s National Court said it had approved his extradition to the United States. The US extradition request that was filed in November said McAfee earned more than 10 million euros in the four years in question but never filed a tax return.
“To conceal his income and assets from the Internal Revenue Service… the defendant ordered part of his income to be paid to straw men and placed the property in their names,” it said. John McAfee is known as a man who rose from ashes and was reduced to ashes again by his own doings. Nishay Sanan, the Chicago-based attorney defending him on those cases, said by phone that McAfee “will always be remembered as a fighter.”
