The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) made some key recommendations to Indian mobile numbers. After seeking views from various people on increasing demand for mobile numbers, TRAI has decided to begin 11-digit number series in the country.
Currently, the 10-digit number series is in use and with 11-digit numbering scheme for mobile phones, TRAI is expecting that growing demand for new mobile numbers can be reduced. TRAI said that adding a number ‘9’ to mobile numbers can accommodate some 1000 Cr fresh mobile numbers and brings in adequate availability.
Also, the regulatory said that mobile users should add number ‘0’ as prefix while making calls to a landline. But, it is not necessary for landline to landline, mobile to mobile and mobile to landline calls. In the past, the regulatory has reviewed India’s numbering a couple of times – in 1993 and 2003.
Also, TRAI has recommended to move dongles from a 10-digit numbering series to a 13-digit number.
