On Friday, after the local cops had set up diversions across Kanpur city, for President Ram Nath Kovind convoy to pass, a tragic incident took place simultaneously in the stuck up traffic. The 50-year-old Vandana Mishra, who was the chairperson for the women’s wing of the local chapter of the Indian Industries Association died due to Covid-19 complications as she was stuck up in the traffic all the while.
An investigation is being conducted into the unfortunate incident by an ADCP level officer, said Kanpur Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B B G T S Murthy. Also, the official Twitter handle of the Kanpur Police Commissionerate tweeted an apology for the death of Mishra. “Kanpur City Police and I personally seek forgiveness for IIA’s chairperson sister Vandana Mishra’s death. This is a big lesson for the future. We pledge to ensure that our route arrangement is such that citizens have to wait for the least amount of time so that such incidents are not repeated,” said the tweet.
Comin into the details, Vandana Mishra was travelling to a local hospital as she was suffering from breathlessness due to covid. But she was stopped for the President’s arrival and was stuck in traffic between the Nand Lal intersection and Govindpuri flyover. She was also reportedly suffering from nausea and vomiting that evening. Mishra went to see a doctor the same day in the morning and after increased symptoms, she had to travel back to the hospital again.
“There was a lot of traffic on the route to the hospital, they got late and she threw up in the car. Her family members gave her CPR and tried to save her as one of her family members is a doctor,” Indian Industries Association Kanpur Divisional chairman Alok Agarwal said. “She is survived by two sons. One of them is supposed to get married soon,” added Agarwal. It is a protocol to block traffic when VIP cars pass on the same route. But unfortunately, Mishra’s vehicle got stuck as well.
President Kovind is on a three-day visit to Kanpur and the chief minister and governor were also in the city to welcome the former. Kanpur police wrote, “Honourable President sir expressed distress over the untimely death of sister Vandana Mishra. He called the Kanpur police Commissioner and District Magistrate to inquire about the incident and expressed grief. He instructed the officials to ensure that his message reaches the family and the officers attended the funeral and extended the President’s message to the grieving family.”
