The search and rescue mission for the missing Titan submersible has come to a crucial conclusion.
US Coast Guard officials said in a press conference on Thursday that the debris they found on the ocean belonged to the Titan submersible about 1600 feet from the bow of the Titanic.
Also, it announced that it is consistent with the ‘catastrophic loss of the pressure chanber.’ OceanGate also released a statement saying they believe the passengers onboard the Titanic expedition submersible have sadly been lost.’
‘On behalf of the United States Coast Guard and the entire unified command, I offer my deepest condolences to the families. The debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel,’ Rear Admiral John Mauger said in a news conference on Thursday.
The submersible is a 22-foot-long vessel owned by OceanGate lost contact with a chartered ship on Sunday morning. It was more than halfway into its dive to the wreck of the Titanic and it has only 96 hours of Oxygen equipped for five persons onboard.
When asked about the chances of recovering the bodies of the victims, Admiral Mauger said he did not have an answer for that. ‘This is an incredibly unforgiving environment down there on the sea floor,’ he said.
