From India to the White House: Kamala Harris Post Goes Viral

Published by

USA Vice President and Indian origin lady Kamala Harris, who is the Democratic candidate for the presidential election against former president Donald Trump, often talked about her mother Shyamala Gopalan Harris during media campaigns and public rallies ahead of the much anticipated polls.

She shared several anecdotes about her mother, a scientist and breast cancer researcher who contributed to the development of the treatments for the disease. Gopalan met Jamaican immigrant Donald Harris in the 1960s at the University of California in Berkeley, where he had come to study economics, and later married him. Kamala Harris was born to them in 1964.

Just a couple of days before elections, Kamala Harris shared a heartwarming childhood picture with her mother on Sunday in a post on X, “My mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris, came to the United States from India alone at the age of 19. Her courage and determination made me who I am today.” Kamala very much resembles her mother in the adorable picture.

In her maiden speech as the party’s official presidential nominee, Harris talked about the journey of her mother, who left India at 19 years age to pursue a master’s degree in California. After getting divorced with Donald Harris, Gopalan raised both daughters Kamala and Maya.

During her speeches, Kamala fondly remembered stories from her childhood to strike a personal and emotional connection with voters. Kamala often emphasised how she intends to work for middle-class families that reflect her own upbringing. She also talked about caring for her sick mother during her last days. Shyamala died in 2009 after battling colon cancer.
