Tibet Earthquake: 7.1 Magnitude, At Least 126 Killed

A strong earthquake in the high-altitude region of western China and some areas of Nepal damaged hundreds of houses and at least 126 people were killed in Tibet. Many others were trapped in the broken houses.

Rescue operations are underway and the search for survivors is going on in the heavily damaged villages. Around 3000 rescuers were deployed. More than 180 people were injured in Tibet on the Chinese side of the border.

More than 1000 homes were damaged and the streets were littered with debris, bricks, and crushed cars.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake magnitude was measured to be 7.1 and was shallow at a depth of about 6 miles. About 150 aftershocks were recorded in the nine hours after the earthquake.

Mount Everest scenic area on the Chinese side was closed.
