Good Word Of Mouth, But Bad Collections

Last Friday’s release of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2 was met with optimistic expectations, but the movie ultimately untying to live up to its potential. Despite positive initial responses and positive word-of-mouth reviews, collections saw a steady decrease due to the lack of audience interest.

The film was been doing very well in Tamil cities, while providing only moderate financial returns in Telugu states, with better numbers at multiplexes. Although it has benefited from positive word of mouth, its Tamil weekend collections are not as large as the previous installment.

Reviews from critics have been mixed, with some opining that the movie is too slow-paced and similar to a television serial, while others praise its portrayal of Adithya Karikalan relative to Ponniyin Selvan.

Some people may feel that there is a lack of interest in preserving historical stories amongst youth, which could pose a threat to these collections being kept alive. OTT platforms have offered an interesting medium for illustrating stories in new and creative ways. Recently, there has been discussion around the Tamil people feeling hurt by the ending of a movie due to too much sympathy being given to one character (Nandini).

Let’s expect that the collections will increase this week.
