It is not an exaggeration to say that films are an indispensable part of the lives of Telugu people. We embrace movies every Friday irrespective of language and actors. While moviegoers in our neighbouring states prefer watching films made by their stars, Telugu audiences shower immense love on dubbing movies as well besides encouraging our films. This is the reason why the market for dubbing films in Telugu States increased by leaps and bounds over the years.
After the Covid pandemic, the market for other language films has increased manifold because of the huge patronage showcased by our audience. We have contributed more than 700 Crores gross to trade in the last couple of years. Dubbing films like Kantara, Vikram, KGF 2, 777 Charlie, and Jailer saw huge box office success in the Telugu States. Shah Rukh Khan’s latest blockbuster Jawan has joined the list too. The Atlee directional has embarked on a record-breaking start in our states on its opening day.
The trend of encouraging dubbing films started long back. Films of legendary directors like Maniratnam, Shankar and Bharati Raja garnered huge reception from our audience. The massive box office success of Shankar’s Bharateeyudu, Aparichitudu, Boys and Robot in Telugu States stands as testimony to the fact that Telugu audience showered immense love towards dubbing films. Even the re-releases of Surya S/o Krishnan and Raghuvaran BTech drew huge crowds in our states. Tentpole Hollywood films are no exception to this trend.
Looking at the box office performance of Jailer and the openings of Jawan, it is once again proved that Telugu audience are the biggest movie lovers in our country. This is why the theatrical rights of dubbing films are being snapped for huge prices. Buyers are very confident that upcoming big-budget films from Tamil and Hindi will find good patronage from Telugu audiences. Vijay’s much-anticipated film Leo is the next biggie which did a sensational pre-release business in Telugu States. The dubbing rights were snapped for a whopping 21 crores and this shows the faith of trade circles in our audience.
Unfortunately, there is no reciprocation for our films in other states. Barring a handful of hits, Telugu films hardly received any support from audiences in other languages. Except for Karnataka, no other territory has encouraged our films in recent years. This is a sad reality.
