Exclusive Interview – The Humble Maestro Vijay Sethupathi

Basking in the success of his latest film Maharaja, Vijay Sethupathi opens up about his career and more in an exclusive chat with Gulte.com

The actor’s offscreen persona is best defined by his humility and his philosophical outlook towards life and his answers throughout the interaction with Gulte reflected the same.

Vijay Sethupathi emphasizes on how a solid relationship with a film’s director helps his acting process and his performance to a great extent. Talking about the time he spent with director Sriram Raghavan before their film Merry Christmas went on floors, Vijay Sethupathi reveals that a month or so of free time before the shoot freed up his mind and made him more creative. He also mentions how his conversations with Maharaja’s director Nithilan Saminathan, ranging beyond cinema, is crucial to stimulating an environment that is most conducive towards art.

While talking about success, the actor mentions that while the success of his film gives him relief, the failure of his film on the other hand can keep him worried for anywhere between a day to a week. “But you have to move on. Be it failure or success, you cannot be in its grip for more than a week,” says, Vijay Sethupathi.

Vijay notes that empathy is crucial for understanding acting, revealing that the key to cracking performances onstage is to look at people around you and observe your relationships with them closely.

Going back to the time when he first started out in the industry, Vijay reveals that everyone’s journey is shaped by their intention. “If your heart is in the right place, if your intention is right, you will achieve what you want. Your success does not depend on the people you meet as much as it depends on your intentions.”
