In a heinous crime, a mentally challenged woman was gangraped in Vijayawada Government Hospital by confining her in a room. Three contract employees of the hospital sexually assaulted the 23-year-old victim after confining her for 30 hours, from April 19 to April 20.
Following reports about the incident, the state government suspended Nunna CI and Sector SI for their negligence in taking action even after the victims’ parents lodged a complaint that their daughter was missing. The victim’s parents alleged that lack of quick response led to the ghastly incident. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also directed the officials to release a solatium of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s family.
According to the police, one Dara Srikant had befriended the victim and promised to marry her, apart from providing a job. On April 19, Srikant took her to the GGH in Vijayawada where he has been working as a contract employee. He kept her in a room and sexually abused her the whole night.
The next day, Pawan, who is a friend of Srikant, raped the victim.
The same day, the victm’s parents approached the Nunna police station and lodged a complaint that their daughter had been missing since April 19 evening. They even provided the mobile number from which they received a call from their daughter but the police asked them to come in the evening.
In the evening, the victim’s parents were told that they had identified the number to be of Srikant, an employee of the Vijayawada GGH. The police called him and when they asked him about her, he told that he had seen the victim on the premises of the hospital and asked her to go home in an autorickshaw.
The victim’s parents alleged that the police had not taken any action believing in the words of Srikant.
However, the parents went to the GGH and to their utter shock found their daughter tied in a room and a youth sexually abusing her. Soon they caught the youth and handed him over to the police. He was identified as Babu Rao, who informed the police that Pawan and Srikant also sexually abused the victim.
Police Commissioner Kanti Rana Tata said that the trio had been arrested and that the victim was admitted to the hospital.
The Opposition parties, including the TDP, Jana Sena and Left parties, staged a dharna at the police station holding the cops responsible for the crime. They alleged that negligence on the part of the police led to the ghastly incident.
