3-Time BRS MLA Found Not Indian, Fined Rs 30 Lakhs

In a very interesting and peculiar case, the High Court of Telangana has find BRS ex MLA Chennamaneni Ramesh Rs 30 lakh for duping the electoral system about his Indian citizenship.

Going into the story, Chennamaneni has been serving as Vemulawada MLA on BRS behalf for the 15 years before losing in the 2023 election. However, the issue here is that his competitor Adi Srinivasa had been waging an elongated legal battle for the last few years as he claims that Ramesh is not an Indian citizen and he is wrongly contesting the election. The case had been court for many years now.

Today, in a pretty interesting judgement, the High Court is identified that Ramesh is indeed not an Indian citizen and is a German citizen.

The Court imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh to Chennamaneni Ramesh which includes Rs 25 lakh compensation to the petitioner and incumbent Vemulawada MLA from Congress, Adi Srinivas for contesting as an MLA with fake documents and Rs 5 lakh to the Legal Services Authority.

The BRA MLA shockingly served as MLA for three terms on BRS behalf by creating false documents about his Indian citizenship, while in reality, he is a German citizen. This is a one of a kind case in the Indian electoral system. As is known, it is against law for a foreign citizen with an active citizenship outside India to contest in the elections.
