The enforcement of lockdown in all the states is slowly turning to brutal from being strict. We have been witnessing several instances where the police are acting brutally on common citizens during the lockdown. In Chattisgarh state, the Surajpur district collector abused his power by slapping a youth who came out to buy medicines during the lockdown on Saturday. The video of the same went viral on social media and it received a lot of criticism.
As per the latest reports, the Chattisgarh chief minister sacked the Surajpur district collector Ranbir Sharma. As soon as the video garnered huge attention from the media, civil servants, IAS Association and the journalists have demanded strict action against him. This has pushed the collector to tender an apology for the physical assault.
Ranbir Sharma released a video, asking for an apology for his behavior. He explained that the person he assaulted initially told that he is out to buy medicines and later told him that he is going to see his grandmother. However, Ranbir apologizes for his behavior. In the widely circulating video, Sharma is seen taking the person’s phone and throws it to the ground. He then slaps him and asks the other cops to thrash the man.
The matter has reached Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel’s office. He has ordered to remove Bhupesh Baghel from office, with immediate effect.
Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel tweeted, “Through social media, the case of misbehavior of a young man by Surajpur Collector Ranbir Sharma has come to my notice. It is very sad and condemnable. In Chhattisgarh, no such act will be tolerated at all. Instructions have been given to remove Collector Ranbir Sharma with immediate effect. Such conduct is not acceptable in the official life of any officer. I am upset with this incident. I apologize to the young man and his family.”
The chief minister’s office also confirmed that the youth will get a new mobile phone as compensation. “Chief Minister @bhupeshbaghel G has instructed that a new mobile phone should be made available to the youth in Surajpur as compensation for the damaged mobile of the young man during misbehavior with the Collector.”
IAS Association also condemned the act of IAS Ranbir Sharma. “The IAS Association strongly condemns the behavior of Collector Surajpur, Chhattisgarh. It is unacceptable & against the basic tenets of service & civility. Civil servants must have empathy & provide a healing touch to society at all times, more so in these difficult times.”
