Ever since the Unique Identification Authority of India, shortly called the Aadhar card was introduced, it underwent many reforms. Over the years, Aadhar was linked to the mobile, bank account, Permanent Account Number (PAN) and stuff. Now Aadhar has been linked to Voter ID.
As part of Electoral Reforms, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, introduced a bill to link Voter ID with Aadhar and this received a green flag in the Lok Sabha despite the Opposition parties and leaders’ objection.
While introducing the bill, minister Rijiju said the legislation will make the electoral process more credible and end fraudulent voting. However, the opposition were apprehensive.
Rejecting the Bill, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said in the Lok Sabha said, “Aadhaar was meant to be proof of residence, not proof of citizenship. You are potentially giving voting rights to non-citizens.”
“The linking of voter IDs and Aadhaar violates the fundamental right to privacy as defined by the Supreme Court in the judgment.” added another Congress MP Manish Tiwari
AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that if the Bill becomes an Act, the government will infringe the fundamental rights of citizens.
