Bomman and Belli, two elephant caretakers from Tamil Nadu, have gained worldwide recognition for their work in rescuing and raising elephant calves in the wild. Their story has been documented in the award-winning short film, “The Elephant Whisperers,” produced by Guneet Monga and directed by Kartiki Gonsalves, which recently won the Best Documentary Feature Short Film award at the 95th Academy Awards.
The film’s success has sparked a conversation about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting elephants and their habitats. Bomman and Belli have been praised for their humanitarian efforts, and their meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has further brought attention to their cause.
During their meeting with the Prime Minister, Bomman and Belli stood by as he fed sugarcane to an elephant and interacted with field directors of tiger reserves. The caretaker couple also posed for pictures with Modi, who appeared delighted to be in the company of the elephants and their caretakers.
Bomman considers himself a protector of the forest and is proud that the story of his babies, the elephant calves he has rescued and raised, has been shared with the world. Belli, who has lived in the forest, expressed her gratitude for the recognition and respect she has received as a mother to these elephants.
“The Elephant Whisperers” is currently streaming on Netflix, and its success has shone a light on the important work being done to protect endangered species and their habitats.
