Ever since Elon Musk purchased Twitter, now X, there have been many policy changes including the heavily criticized ‘block feature change’ and allowing third-party companies to train their AI on users’ posts. The changes appear to be leaving many people migrating to other social media platforms like Threads and Mastodon, but the social media platform Bluesky seems to be welcoming more Twitter users than any other platform.
After the recent election, around 115,000 US users reportedly deleted their Twitter accounts. Dorsey introduced the Bluesky project back in 2019 while he was still Twitter CEO. Jack is no longer on Bluesky’s board as of 2024.
Bluesky was invite-only for almost a year and became open to anyone in February 2024. The social media platform is gaining almost 800,000 new users in a day. As of November 2024, Bluesky has more than 16 million users.
Bluesky has a Twitter-like user interface with algorithmic choice, a federated design, and community-specific moderation.
