The bypoll results from four states disappointed the BJP leaders as the party failed to win at least one seat. The BJP drew a blank in all the four states as the ruling parties in the respective states won the bypolls. Significant among the victories that went for the bypolls is that of the Asansol Lok Sabha seat from where former Union minister-turned-TMC candidate and Bollywood actor Shatrugan Sinha had won against BJP MLA-turned-party candidate Agnimitra Paul by a margin of 30,3209 votes. Bypolls for Asansol were necessitated as BJP MP Babul Supriyo quit the party and joined the Trinamool Congress.
The BJP left no stone unturned to ensure that Sinha was defeated but their tricks did not bear fruit as TMC president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took all measures to avert malpractice. Surprisingly, while Supriyo won with a majority of 1.97 lakh votes but Sinha exceeded this number and secured 3,03,209 vote majority. This indicates that one Lok Sabha seat had gone out of the BJP’s account and at the same time, it also helps one understand that Mamata is unbeatable in West Bengal.
Most interesting fact is that the TMC won the Asansol LS seat for the first time since the formation of the party in 1998.
In West Bengal, bypolls were held for Ballygunge Assembly constituency too which was retained by the TMC, thus making a clean sweep in the bypolls.
TMC candidate Babul Supriyo secured 20,228 votes against CPM candidate Saira Shah Halim who clinched the second position and the BJP candidate was pushed to third position.
In Maharashtra, Congress candidate Jayshree Jadhav, who contested on behalf of the ruling alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi, won the Kolhapur North Assembly bypoll securing 54.25 per cent votes. In Chhattisgarh too, Congress candidate Yashoda Nilamber Verma registered victory against the BJP candidate and bagged the Khairagarh Assembly seat.
In Bihar, the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won the Bochahan Assembly seat and it was the only constituency that went for bypolls in that state. RJD candidate Amar Kumar Paswan secured 36,653 votes and emerged victorious pushing BJP candidate Baby Kumari to the second position.
Political analysts said that parting ways with Mukesh Sahani’s Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) has cost the BJP in the Bochahan bypolls. Meanwhile, the RJD clinched the seat after over 15 years as it was benefited due to split in the NDA votes.
