In a major blow to Andhra Pradesh aviation sector, one of the leading airlines SpiceJet has temporarily suspended its operations at Vijayawada International airport (VIA) near Gannavaram. The reason being, the bookings are not even reporting 30 percent and due to this, the airline has incurred losses. Alarmed by this situation, SpiceJet has temporarily suspended its operations.
The management of SpiceJet in a statement said the suspension is applicable for the next two months and regarding the resumption of services, it will take a call in November. But the airline is not sure of recommencing its services from the VIA.
With the latest decision of SpiceJet, the company is not accepting online booking on its official web portal and with flights getting cancelled, the airport witnessed a deserted look.
In the previous regime, SpiceJet had reported eighty percent of bookings and also occupancy in the flights. Now it has fallen to thirty percent while pandemic is also one of the reasons behind this huge drop.
Very recently the VIA received an upgrade with an approach lighting system installed at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore. As a result the visibility on the runway increased by 300 to 400 metres and this allows the pilot to estimate the runway.
Well the runway has increased but the flight operations have dropped.
