Veteran music composer Bappi Lahiri died the other day in Mumbai due to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). He was 69. The doctors have stated that Bappi had been suffering from OSA since 2021. Many people are not aware of this widely prevalent and widely ignored disease. Here is what you need to know about it.
Sleep Apnea is a condition where a person’s breathing stops and starts again repeatedly during sleep. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is one of the three kinds of Sleep Apnea. The other two are Central Sleep Apnea and Complex Sleep Apnea.
OSA is caused when there is a repetitive collapse of the upper airway during sleep. One of the major symptoms of this disease is loud snoring. Daytime sleepiness, being tired during the day, choking spells during sleep and high blood pressure are some of the other symptoms which can cause OSA.
This disease can be diagnosed through a sleep study. The doctors monitor different parameters of the body and its functioning when the person is sleeping to find out if there is a collapse of the upper airway while the person is asleep and if it is causing any effect on the other organs.
Modifications in lifestyle and weight reduction help in curing OSA. People suffering from this disease may also need assisted ventilation in the form of a BiPAP machine, stated the medical experts.
