A UK-based software engineer fell victim to extortion by a woman he met on a matrimonial site. The woman, using a fake profile, lured him into a video call where she allegedly stripped and recorded the call without his knowledge.
She later threatened to share the recording with his parents unless he paid her. Succumbing to the pressure, the techie transferred over Rs 1.1 crore to the woman’s accounts and mobile numbers.
The victim eventually realized her real name and reported the incident to the police. Whitefield CEN Crime police have managed to freeze Rs 84 lakh in the woman’s accounts, and efforts to trace the accused are ongoing.
Authorities urge caution while dealing with strangers online and advise people to disconnect from inappropriate calls and report any suspicious activities promptly.
