“India reported a total of 180 casualties (29.2%) following vaccination across the country” – as per a presentation made to the National AEFI Committee during a meeting held on March 31. Post immunisation, we have 617 critical, including deaths and the complete documentation is available only for 236 (38.3%) cases.
Out of the 617 instances of severe and serious AEFI, 492 have so far been classified on the basis of their severity, by the AEFI Secretariat of the Immunisation Technical Support Unit at the Union health ministry. Similarly, 124 of the 180 deaths have so far been classified for their cause.
And from these 124 deaths, more than 63 (nearly 51%) have been caused due to acute coronary syndrome ( a condition that reduces blood flow to the heart), or simply say heart attacks. Another 11 deaths (12%) are due to stroke. It is also reported that 93 out of 124 deaths have occurred within three days after vaccination.
Within a period of 7 days after the shot, 18 people have lost their lives and eleven of the fatalities took place 8-28 days after vaccination. And, in a shocking development, post mortems have not been conducted in many cases. For Instance, in at least six out of 10 cases where the National AEFI Committee has completed causality assessment, no post mortem has been done, says Malini Aisola, a Public Health Researcher based in Delhi.
The deaths have an uncanny similarities to those recorded in the European Union and the UK, on the basis of which the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has warned to remain aware of the fact that all healthcare professionals and people receiving the vaccine may have a possibility of very rare cases of blood clots combined with low levels of blood platelets within 2 weeks of taking vaccinations.
